Embarrassing things kids may say, that don’t bother me!
Don’t shut your kids up or tell them to hush!
Kids have curious minds & I love answering their questions about our unique family watching their minds try to piece everything together. Their questions do not offend me.
I often get the questions “are your their momma?”, “how are you their momma?”, “Why are they brown?” & I love explaining to children why Kai and Kaynin are so special and unique.
Without asking questions kids will never learn. In a child’s head when they ask the question, “Are you his momma?” and the parent quickly quiets the child, the child thinks they asked something wrong, and there is nothing wrong about my family. It’s our job as adults to teach children about the differences in families and other children.
Both boys understand that they are very special being biracial. My husband and I are making a conscious effort to raise them to be comfortable and confident in being different.
Weekly I encounter instances where I am seen as a sitter, a family friend, or a complete stranger to my own children. Several times kids have tattled on Kai. But when tattling, they go to the wrong parent…. They commonly find another African American mom & tell her, “your son did ____ to me.”
When picking up my sons sports pictures before, I had two different kids in his package. One of the photos was him, and the other was another African American child. When I informed the photographer of the mix up, I was told “I thought they were twins.”
I have let my boys wonder a few feet in front of me dancing and people quite often start looking around asking “where are these boys parents??” as if I’m a complete stranger.
So from our experiences within society, I understand our family may be different than others. But I believe there are teachable moments daily, and I enjoy enlightening others on our very special family so please do not get embarrassed or try to take away your child’s voice when they ask questions that I promise I am use to.
